A Discovery of Sorts
Oct 09
if you’ve read this blog for any amount of time, or know me in real life – then i think it’s well understood that my music collection has remained fairly stagnant over the last, let’s just say 15 years. yes, i listen to current pop hits on pandora. but of the music that i “own” (and by own i mean, of the music that lives on my devices) it’s all pretty much the same catalogue of what i had at about 16 or 17. i’ve got my ladies, i’ve got my folk, and i’ve got britney and james taylor – because clearly they go together.
but the other day, i was driving back from somewhere and heard an interesting profile on ALL THINGS CONSIDERED. EBN wasn’t in the car, otherwise i can pretty much guarantee i would have been listening to something else entirely. leave it to NPR to lead me to my newest musical obsession. side note: i’m starting to feel like should just let npr dictate my life – it already tells me what to read (AGE OF MIRACLES), what to watch (back to dvr-ing the COLBERT REPORT after catching his latest interview on FRESH AIR) and what to eat (did you hear about FERMENTATION?!?).
all of this leads me to DELTA RAE. if memory serves correctly (and a quick review of their wikipedia page tells me i’m on the right track) they are a folk rock band made up of 3 siblings plus a few additions from north carolina (wikipedia also tells me they are ridiculously young – i’m shocked. they sound older). i downloaded their album CARRY THE FIRE and have basically been listening to it on loop for the past several days. i’m totally impressed with myself right now as the album was just released in june and it makes me feel like i might not be too late to this party*. the songs are like stories and they take twists and turns both lyrically and melodically (i sound like i know what i’m talking about…i don’t). according to wikipedia there’s also a debut album from back in ’10 but i can’t seem to find a place to download it. mragh.
here’s a taste of what we’re working with:
*let me just throw it out there – i get it, some of you probably already know them, you love them, you’ve been following them for ages yada yada yada. now we have something in common. but if you’re like me, and you live under a rock and your kid wakes up at 1, 4, 5 and then 6am and you haven’t showered since saturday (oops) then, you should really check DELTA RAE out. i don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
