No More Monkeys Jumping on the Bed

Sep 19

we had a big weekend in the BN house.

that’s right – EBN’s sleeping situation went from crib to toddler bed.

we’d been considering the change for a while and were debating if we should simply convert, as our crib came with a bed rail, or  jump into the deep-end with both feet and closed eyes and a plugged nose, and upgrade to a real, live, big girl bed.  after hemming and hawing and doing a whole lot of nothing other than collect big-girl bed ideas on PINTEREST, we decided that for us, we should stick with what we had – keep it simple, stupid.  duh.

there were 2 main reasons that we knew it was time for a change.  first, EBN is not petite (i think that’s how you say it) and with a crib, she was starting to look (who knows has she’s been feeling) trapped.  sure she’s got a lot crammed into her crib along with her, but it was getting cramped and over-crowded. second, EBN is heavy and leaning in to get her out of the crib was getting harder and harder.  forget about trying to lower into the crib gently – she was basically being dropped in at this point.

also, when we went to visit a friend last, EBN squealed when she saw her toddler bed.  sold.

so on friday we unloaded all her friends from her crib (she sure has amassed quite the crew) and got to work.  in one, two, three the conversion was complete and our little girl was beyond excited.  she immediately climbed into her new bed, grabbed COCO and put her head on the pillow.  ”nap time Evie, nap time Evie,” she said again and again.  who cares that it was about 8:30 in the morning.

plus, now that she has a bed, we get to do this:

i’m still day dreaming about a real, true big girl bed.  i plan to crochet a blanket and just wait until EBN discovers all that is a down comforter.  it’s going to be epic when it happens.  but i think we can hit pause for now.  other than a top sheet – girl needs a top sheet!

i wish i could leave you with these images but alas, there is a bit more to share.  while EBN has made a seamless transition to toddler bed, she, unfortunately, had a not so great encounter with another bed in the house.

on saturday night, as i was putting laundry away EBN was doing this thing she tends to do in our room – sitting on our bed and throwing herself back into the pillows.  it’s fun and it’s supervised.  but she got a bit too close to the edge and when she threw herself back half of her body missed and she went tumbling to the floor.

the good news is that she rolled (and bounced, as our floor is cork) so even though she threw herself back with a lot of force, she hit the ground a bit more slowly (not much), twice – first landing on her head, then right below her eye (i was sure we were going to have a gnarly shiner).  she freaked herself out, she nominated me for mama-fail of the year and she instituted a new house-wide rule – no more monkeys jumping on the bed – period.

i’ve gotta admit – it was awful, terrifying and while she’s fine, i’m not sure if i will ever fully recover.  i slept zero hours on saturday night, checking on her every 15 minutes and also hating myself for allowing all of this to happen.  but, after the “episode” EBN was especially cuddly, holding on to her mama ever so tight and cuddling for hours on the couch.  that part was pretty memorable as well.

She’s such a sweetie, think of it as toughing her up and when she stumbles, she’ll be like, ‘Ah, that’s nuthin, I was catching air my my mommy and daddy’s bed one time and did a helicopter move and landed on our cork floor, got shiners to prove it!” you are a great and attentive mama!

i’m trying to teach her to say, “you should see the other guy…”
